How To Keep The Dust Down … and Savings Up!

Russo Recycling, a transfer station in Queens, NY , finds a capitol solution in Dust Control Technology’s® innovative product, the DustBoss®.

Russo Recycling is a transfer station that processes solid waste, in addition to construction and demolition debris. The transfer station is an outdoor facility covering about 2 acres in Queens, NY. On a yearly basis, approximately 250 tons of debris goes in and out of the transfer station.

In the past, Russo Recycling had tried using both a sprinkler system and the traditional practice of spraying a fire hose as a means of controlling dust in the transfer yard.

The sprinkler system was ineffective and inflexible. The fire hose method was also incapable of controlling dust — and it proved to be an expensive method, since it required paying a worker to stand and spray the pile of debris all day long.

Neither of these dust control options were effective, used together or alone — even a direct hit of water from the fire hose could not control the dust.

An Innovative Solution

Russo Recycling found the DustBoss®, the world’s first fully automatic, oscillating ducted dust and odor controller and quickly realized this technology might be a suitable dust control method.

They tried the DustBoss® and it became apparent that this was a suitable solution for controlling dust in their transfer yard. With the DustBoss®, there was a noticeable improvement in the air quality at the facility.

The Active Air action sprayed a fine mist of water over the material coming off the belt and sealed in the dust, dropping it out of the air and onto the ground.

The amount of moisture put out by the DustBoss® was enough to eliminate dust in the air, but not so much that it would oversaturate the material in the yard, like the other methods they had used in the past.

This decrease in water usage translated into not only a water savings, but it also meant the material being hauled to the landfill weighed less, resulting in lower fuel costs and less wear-and-tear on heavy equipment.

Additionally, Russo experienced a savings in manpower hours by no longer using a worker to stand and spray a fire hose over the material all day.

Sal Russo, owner of the transfer station has made the following observations regarding use of the DustBoss®:

  • » Fast return on investment — pays for itself within 8 months
  • » Improved dust control in and around the transfer yard
  • » Better work environment — less water and absolutely no puddles

Sal Russo, owner of Russo Recycling, comments, “The DustBoss® has helped us keep dust down to zero when moving material on the stacker belts onto the stockpile. We are very satisfied with our purchase of the DustBoss®.”
