Creating Better Compost

… get higher quality using less manpower

Kurtz Brothers Composting finds a capitol solution in Dust Control Technology’s® innovative product, the DustBoss®.

As the largest mulch and composting company in the state of Ohio, Kurtz Brothers Composting is a leader in their industry. With 12 locations, the company is very conscious of cost- and time-effective ways to process compost.

Kurtz Brothers used the method of spraying a fire hose or sprinklers to condition their compost piles. Although a traditional way to condition compost, it was not a very effective practice. Often, this method caused mixed results in the quality of the final product and was also very labor intensive.

An innovative technology

Kurtz Brothers Composting became interested in the DustBoss®, a fully automatic, oscillating ducted fan with a high pressure misting system, after being introduced to this exciting new technology.

As a leader in the composting industry, they recognized this new technology would be a great asset to their operation and could see the potential for an effective composting tool in this multi-functional piece of equipment.

They anticipated the oscillating action of the DustBoss® would distribute water more evenly to produce a higher quality product.

An effective solution

Kurtz Brothers decided to try out the effectiveness of the DB-60 at a 100-acre site where over 300,000 yards of compost are processed each year. Within a few days, there was a considerable improvement in the quality of the compost pile.

The misting action of the DB-60 unit mitigated dust at the compost site, all the while providing an essential ingredient to the composting process—water. This multi-faceted solution darkens the compost and aids in the maturation of the product by improving the natural microbial action.

The DustBoss® technology helped the composting pile remain in an aerobic state, preserving the quality of the final product. The previous method of spraying a hose to mature the pile promoted an aerobic state which is detrimental to the composting process.

Lenny Neal, of Kurtz Brothers, has made the following observations regarding use of the DustBoss®:

  • » Fast return on investment—pays for itself in one 8-month period
  • » Improved air quality at the composting site.
  • » More consistency of quality within the compost pile
  • » Aids in the process of composting by contributing to enhanced microbial action
  • » Promotes an aerobic state within the composting pile, preserving the quality of the compost
