Case study: UK metal reclamation facility declares all-out war to suppress dust

10 dust controllers eliminating dust at metal reclamation facility

“The mobility of the DustBoss means that we can take it to any area on our sites – be it stockpiling or processing – set it up and have it running in no time.”

– John Rice, director

One of the UK’s largest metal recycling specialists has announced an all-out war on process dust an army of ten high-performance dust suppression units, to be deployed among the company’s facilities throughout the country.

Metal + Waste Recycling Ltd. (MWR) specified the high-powered misting devices — supplied through UK importer, INMALO — to supplement the custom-made static dust suppression systems already in place at all of the company’s recycling locations. The move is another measure in the firm’s continuous effort toward comprehensive management of the inevitable dust from fragmentizing, shearing, baling and stockpiling.

MWR specializes in factory collections and total waste management, including end-of-life vehicle (ELV) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) processing. The company reclaims a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, C&D debris and industrial/commercial waste, processing the materials so they can be used as feedstocks for manufacturing new products.

Processed scrap metal from MWR provides high-quality feed for a broad range of international mills and foundries, with export markets primarily served by containerized reclaimed materials and foundry-ready secondary metals.

“The very nature of our business means that dust creation is unavoidable,” said Metal + Waste director John Rice. “We’ve always paid particular attention to the environmental impact that process dust can have, using point-specific dust suppression to ensure maximum control during certain operations.”

“We tested the market and looked at a number of mobile dust suppressors.”

At times, however, the company found that static dust suppression wasn’t sufficient, especially when material exits processing equipment and gets moved, stored or shipped. The desire to take dust management to another level fueled the search for an efficient and cost-effective solution.

“We tested the market and looked at a number of mobile dust suppressors,” said Rice. “We noticed the quality construction of the DustBoss 60 (DB-60). INMALO loaned us a unit on demonstration and we were impressed with its performance,” he continued. “That’s really what convinced us that these were the dust suppressors we should invest in.”

MWR also took advantage of different mounting options for the DB-60s, ordering five on wheeled carriages and five on skid mounts.

“The mobility of the DustBoss means that we can take it to any area on our sites – be it stockpiling or processing – set it up and have it running in no time,” Rice added. “We can take our dust suppression wherever it’s needed most on a given day, moving on to other areas quickly and easily.”

The dust suppression equipment

The DB-60 uses a series of 30 specially-designed nozzles to atomize droplets to the optimum size for maximum particle attraction and coverage. The powerful, water-fed design employs a 25 HP fan motor that generates 30,000 CFM (850 m3), for a throw of more than 200 feet (60 meters).

MWR can now blanket as much as 21,000 square feet (1,950 square meters) with each machine, creating a fine mist of water droplets sized from 50-200 microns. When equipped with optional 359° oscillation, the DB-60 can cover 125,000 square feet (11,612 square meters), or approximately 1.16 hectares.

Any of the DustBoss designs can be ordered with a dosing pump to add surfactants for superior particle attraction or additives for odor control, and can be equipped with a supplemental filter system permitting the use of non-potable water sources.
